I created The Machine series in 2005, at a moment when my way of working was reaching a breaking point. I was struggling with a pictorialist project inspired by the soft aesthetics of 17th-century Dutch still lifes, and I felt increasingly confined by imitation and decoration. At some point in the studio, almost instinctively, I abandoned that direction.
Instead, I turned my attention to a vintage typewriter standing nearby. Its cold, mechanical presence felt like a necessary counterpoint to what I had been doing. By focusing on the machine, I moved away from romantic composition and toward structure, rhythm, and form. What initially seemed like an ordinary object revealed an unexpected, almost infinite landscape of geometric relationships.
Looking back, this series marks a clear turning point in my practice. It was less about photographing a machine and more about clarifying how I wanted to work—analytically, attentively, and without decorative intent. The principles that emerged here continue to shape my approach to photography to this day.
